Creating A Blog

Blogs are an excellent way to market and learn about what works and what does not work. According to Technical Communication, Lannon (2007) notes that the use of an external blog can increase customer feedback, enhance marketing and public relations, basically assisting in personalization of an individual or organization (p.324).  The purpose of this blog is to create an avenue that will assist me in finishing school and applying for internships.
A blog has be tailored to a particular area of interest, whether business, school, or even hobbies; knowing and having a purpose will aid in maintaining interest. The design of a blog should be simple, with the use of color contrasts and without appearing busy; the information posted should be easy to follow and not overbearing. In How to start a blog: 10 pro tips, the author mentions how readers should immediately be drawn to your page, by being “attractive, creative, and clever” (Creative Blog, 2014); they go on to stress the importance of speaking to readers and how design demonstrates uniqueness and mystery. I am learning to discernment what is important when it comes to design and that less is more.

Most blogs are public and the information presented (content) should be geared to a highly diverse group. Know your audience! For this particular course, my audience includes our professor and my fellow classmates, but if we were to expand my blog to communication with an emphasis on fantasy football, well then the purpose, design, content, and audience change. On other blogs, I noticed the obvious contrast of colors and how effective they were in captivating my attention, I do agree that, “Contrasting colours can work well in the right design” (Creative Blog, 2014). The purpose, design, content, and audience all contribute to the effectiveness of any form of writing.

  1. Hi Sabrina,

Your blog is well written, and captures the audience attention with images/video. Don't forget, some audience members love a catchy title to lead them into your message. Too often an audience can begin taking short cuts by only focusing on the images/video. To avoid that, one solution would be incorporate images, just not after every paragraph.
