Technical Definitions

Technical definitions provide the users with critical information that is essential to understanding

particular terms that are being defined. Technical definitions make it easy for all users to learn and

clearly understand terms. They act as a guideline. Although terms are define in one form, there could

be multiple definitions that coincide with the same term. With technical definitions, the term is

broken down and defined according to the method in which the term is used. According to Lannon

(2008) technical definitions are associated with legal aspects, they hold certain ethical value, and help
with the general population to have a clear definition (Lannon, 2008). Terms must be truthful and not
 misleading to be truly effective.

A term that I am highly affiliated with is OPNAV or Operational Navy. For my particular job it sets

the regulations and instructions as to how the facility to be operated and ran. Being that I work in a

Child Development Center or a military installation, we are required to follow the rules that are

presented to us by the Navy, in addition to outside childcare regulations. In the civilian world, they do
not have to follow the extra instruction because they are not associated with the navy.

The OPNAV manual is provided freely throughout the center and is studied during the mandatory

trainings that are done twice a month. It is divided into sections that are identified by numbers, such

as 9.2 or 1500.4. The numbers signify different instructions and the .1 or .4 demonstrates revisions to

a particular instruction. It is important to understand that this manual is necessary to provide the

workers with the proper instructions on how to run a facility on a naval installation.
